When are you leaving?

People keep asking us when we are leaving, or they say "I thought you said you were leaving" or "Are you still planning on leaving?". Some of the people who have already sailed away ask "When are you going to get here? Join us, the weather's nice" Others who are planning on leaving too say "Hey, maybe you should wait for us and we can all sail down together". Trouble is, is that we like it here, this is a really nice marina, it's well protected and has an awesome harbor master. We've found an excellent community of people and have many friends here. I guess we're just not in that big a hurry, we want to be ready when we do finally go, but believe me, we do want to get out of here, because who wants to spend another summer in the bay? I want to go somewhere warm, I want to be able to go for a morning swim in crystal clear water, I want to learn how to cook fresh fish.

I've gone from saying we'll probably leave next month sometime to maybe we'll leave in the next couple weeks. We're currently paid up through April 15th, so that's our new deadline, whether we are actually ready to leave by then or even do remains to be seen. Eventually we will have to go, we can't afford to stay here much longer and there is no work to be had here anyway, so going somewhere where we can make our dollars last a bit longer and wait out the current recession/depression only makes sense.

Anyway, I'll let you know when we finally cut those dock lines, head out under the Golden Gate Bridge and turn left.

Building a Jordan Series Drogue

What do you get when you take:
147 pieces of rip stop nylon
370 yards of nylon tape
650 yards of thread
380 feet of double braid rope
a sewing machine
and
a latch hook?

A project that took me about 3 weeks to complete. Each piece of material is cut so that it will form the shape of a cone when sewed together. Each cone has 3 30" strips of nylon tape sewed to it, double stitched. Each completed cone is attached to the rope by feeding the ends of the nylon tape through the rope using a latch hook at both ends of the cone and tying a figure 8 knot in the end (that's 882 knots). The cones should be spaced 20" apart.







All this for a item that you hope you never have to use.
